Evidence of a Dwarf Galaxy Stream Populating the Inner Milky Way Halo

چکیده

Stellar streams produced from dwarf galaxies provide direct evidence of the hierarchical formation Milky Way. Here, we present first comprehensive study LMS-1 stellar stream, that detect by searching for wide in Gaia EDR3 data set using STREAMFINDER algorithm. This stream was recently discovered Yuan et al. We as a 60° long to north galactic bulge, at distance ∼20 kpc Sun, together with additional components suggest overall is completely wrapped around inner Galaxy. Using spectroscopic measurements Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, Sloan Digital Survey, and Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment, infer very metal-poor (〈[Fe/H]〉 = −2.1) significant metallicity dispersion (σ[Fe/H] 0.4), it possesses large radial velocity (σv 20 ± 4 km s−1). These estimates imply galaxy stream. The orbit close polar, an inclination 75° plane. Both are remarkably similar globular clusters NGC 5053, 5024, Indus. findings make important contributor population Way halo.

A Neighboring Dwarf Irregular Galaxy Hidden by the Milky Way

We have obtained VLA and optical follow-up observations of the low-velocity H I source HIZSS 3 discovered by Henning et al. 2000 and Rivers 2000 in a survey for nearby galaxies hidden by the disk of the Milky Way. Its radio characteristics are consistent with this being a nearby (∼ 1.8 Mpc) low-mass dwarf irregular galaxy (dIm). Our optical imaging failed to reveal a resolved stellar population...

Evidence for coupling between the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and the Milky Way warp

Using recent determinations of the mass and orbit of Sagittarius, I calculate its orbital angular momentum. From the latest observational data, I also calculate the angular momentum of the Milky Way’s warp. I find that both angular momenta are directed toward l ≈ 270, b = 0, and have magnitude 2–8× 10 M⊙ kpc km s , where the range in both cases reflects uncertainty in the mass. The coincidence ...

The Shape of the Milky Way Halo

The latest Sloan Digital Sky Survey data tracing the tidal stream from the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (dSph) reveals a bifurcation in the distribution of debris. The branching is caused by the projection of the old trailing and young leading tidal arms of the Sagittarius dSph. The angular difference between the branches is a measure of the precession of the orbital plane and hence the aspheri...

Star Streams in the Milky Way Halo

The last 10-20 years has seen a profound shift in views of how the Galaxy’s halo formed. The idea of a monolithic early collapse of a single system (Eggen, Lynden-Bell and Sandage 1962) has been challenged by observations at high redshift and by cosmological models of structure formation. These findings imply that we should see clear evidence of hierarchical formation processes in nearby galaxi...

Chemodynamical Simulations of the Milky Way Galaxy

We present chemodynamical simulations of a Milky Way-type galaxy using a selfconsistent hydrodynamical code that includes supernova feedback and chemical enrichment, and predict the spatial distribution of elements from Oxygen to Zinc. In the simulated galaxy, the kinematical and chemical properties of the bulge, disk, and halo are consistent with the observations. The bulge formed from the ass...
